Why Should You Major in Turfgrass Management at Penn State?

When choosing a college to go to for your major, it can be kind of hard. At first you have some good ideas of places you would like to go but other obstacles eventually end up in the way. I know this experience when I first was choosing a college.

As I looked at different Universities for my Major Turfgrass Management, one thing I wanted to make sure was that I choose the best school that stands out in the Turfgrass workforce. That school is Penn State! Penn State graduates are today in high demand and has a grand history of prepping students for real life experiences on the job.

The program was started in 1929 and is one of the first in the nation to employ a Turfgrass extension specialist, Ph.D. scientist, and first to offer a two year and undergraduate program. Students can also pursue graduate study to teach in academic institutions. I am going for my Bachelor degree in Turfgrass Management and have learned a ton of information from the professors.

Penn State offers so many experiences that other colleges do not. You can do research at the Joseph Valentine Center, work on the Blue, White Golf Courses, and even work at Beaver Stadium. I prefer sports turf related fields such as football, softball, and soccer so I choose to work at Beaver Stadium. Not only do I receive great knowledge from my professors, but I get to apply that knowledge I have learned in class when I am working with Beaver Stadium.

This is why I chose/like Penn State. The experiences are unbelievable! Penn State classes give you the knowledge and skills required in the field. You will learn how to manage a professional field, diagnose turf problems, make fertilizer requirements, track weather day by day, run an organization, communicate effectively with others in the industry, etc. Most of all between my classes and my job at Beaver Stadium, it has helped me to grow as a person to have more confidence in myself and be a leader.

The friends you make are truly everlasting. Enjoy every moment at Penn State…but don’t forget to have fun as well! By the time you graduate, you will have all skills necessary to obtain a professional position. This is why you should choose Penn State!
